Temporary Visits - Transit

Definition: Nationals of non-visa exempted countries and regions going to a third country via Japan.

Those who are not required to pass customs (ie. leave the international transit area) during their layover do not need a visa.

If you are unsure whether you need to pass customs, please verify with your airline or travel agent.

Please be aware that some airports in Japan do not let you stay in the terminal overnight.

Since July 1, 2026, the category "Transit visa" has been discontinued.
If you need to pass customs when you transit in Japan, please apply for a "Temporary Visitor Visa".
