On July 9, Consul General Akihiko Uchikawa presented the Consul General of Japan Award to six former Japanese language instructors from his jurisdiction. Not only did the latter teach the Japanese language for many years, they also contributed to the promotion of its education in various ways, including through their cooperation with the Japanese Language Speech Contest co-organized every year by our Consulate General and their involvement with the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE).

The promotion of Japanese language education deepens other countries’ understanding of and interest in Japan, and helps foster exchanges and maintain and develop friendly relations between Japan and the world. It is therefore natural to honor these six individuals who have made significant contributions to the promotion of local Japanese language education, and to offer our most heartfelt gratitude. The Consulate General will continue to work in close cooperation with Japanese language instructors and others to enhance interest in and understanding of Japan’s language and culture.

The former Japanese language teachers awarded are as follows.

  • Ms. Michiko Nishijima, New Brunswick University/St. Thomas University, NB
  • Mr. Takehiro Kanaya, Université de Montréal, QC
  • Ms. Akemi Mallette Ohta, Université de Montréal, QC
  • Ms. Yuko Murakami, Université de Montréal, QC
