Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony at the Montreal Botanical Garden (August 5, 2025)

On the evening of August 5, Consul General Uchikawa and Montreal City Council Chair Martine Musau Muele participated in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony held at the Japanese Garden of the Montreal Botanical Garden. Together, they rang the Peace Bell at the exact moment when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima 80 years ago and joined attendees in a moment of silence. The Peace Bell was donated by the City of Hiroshima to the City of Montreal 27 years ago. During the commemoration, a message from the Mayor of Hiroshima City, Mr. Kazumi Matsui, was read in Japanese, English, and French.
The event drew many attendees, including members of the Federal Parliament, a student from Hiroshima currently staying in Montreal, and a significantly larger number of local residents than last year. In an increasingly uncertain international security environment, the Consulate General of Japan reaffirms its wish for a world without nuclear weapons and renews its deepest condolences to the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We would also like to thank the City of Montreal, which, as part of its sister city relationship with Hiroshima, has been organizing this event for 28 years.
