Meeting with Ms. Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (October 26, 2022)

On Wednesday, October 26, Consul General Jun Saito met with Ms. Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), whose headquarters are in Montreal. Together, they enthusiastically discussed the imminent holding of the 15th United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP 15) in Montreal this December. The Convention on Biological Diversity has three distinct goals: the conservation of biodiversity; the sustainable use of biodiversity; and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. Japan has actively contributed to these missions, particularly through the "Aichi Targets", defined at the 10th United Nations Conference on Biodiversity held in Nagoya, Japan, in 2010.
