On the evening of Friday, August 5, Consul General SAITO and Ms. Martine Musau Muele, Montreal City Council Chair, rang together the “Peace Bell” in the Japanese Garden of the Montreal Botanical Garden. A minute of silence was followed, coinciding with the moment the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima (in 1945) on the morning of August 6 (Japan Time), 77 years ago. This emblematic bell was gifted by the City of Hiroshima to Montreal 24 years ago, on the occasion of their twinning. On this 77th anniversary of the atomic bombing, Consul General SAITO wishes to renew his condolences to the victims of this tragedy. It is to be hoped that the friendship and bilateral relations between the two cities will soon be revitalized as 2023 celebrates the 25th anniversary of the twinning of Hiroshima and Montreal.
