Passing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (July 8, 2022)

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe passed away on Friday, July 8, 2022, after being shot during a House of Councillors election campaign tour. The Consulate General of Japan in Montreal wishes to express its sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace.

The despicable act, which happened in the midst of an election campaign – elections being the very foundation of democracy –, is unequivocally unacceptable. The Consulate General of Japan in Montreal condemns it in the strongest possible terms.

The Government of Japan and the Japanese people will never yield to violence.
