Conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun onto Mr. Jean Dorion (November 3, 2019)

2019/11/6

On November 3, 2019, the Government of Japan announced the recipients of the 2019 Fall Conferment of Decorations onto Foreign Nationals.

The Consulate General of Japan in Montreal is pleased to announce that former Delegate General of Québec in Tokyo, Mr. Jean Dorion was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette for his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and promoting parliamentary exchanges between Japan and Canada.

The Order of the Rising Sun, established in 1875, is Japan’s oldest awards system. Its different classes of decoration are awarded to individuals, both Japanese and non-Japanese nationals, in recognition of their distinguished accomplishments.

As Delegate General of Québec in Tokyo from 1994 to 2000, Mr. Dorion met with and welcomed representatives from the Government of Quebec, economic missions, and various organisations, as well as other VIPs. Moreover, he invited experts in various fields, such as Quebec and Canadian politics, economy or media, to hold conferences in Japan, and encouraged the reciprocal diffusion of information on Quebec and Canada, and on Japan, thus significantly contributing to raise the level of familiarity and understanding among the Japanese in regards to Quebec and Canada. He also succeeded in promoting a better understanding of Japan in Quebec by sharing knowledge through conferences, publications, interviews, and such.
