Conference by Adrian Favell titled “Japon : comment gérer et vivre dans une société post-croissance?” organised by the Montreal Centre for International Studies of the University of Montreal (CERIUM) and the Consulate General of Japan (February 26, 2018)

2018/3/9
Dr. Adrian Favell

On February 26, the renowned sociologist from University of Leeds, a leading expert on social criticism in modern art in Japan, has prepared a talk about the extraordinary creativity of artists and architects following the changes in the culture and the structure of Japan since the end of the "bubble" of the 1980s. Following the Kobe disaster in 1995, elements of political protest and a new alternative in the artistic presentation concerning society revolved around new models of society in response to the new challenges. The triple catastrophe of March 2011 only accentuated this new social artistic activism. Social art represented by Yanagi Yukinori is very far from the Neo-Tokyo vision represented by the Mori Art Museum which is the center of contemporary art in Japan.
