On August 5th, a memorial ceremony of the Hiroshima bombing victims took place at the Montreal Botanical Garden. To commemorate this day of August 6th, 1945, Mr. Hideaki Kuramitsu, Consul General, and Mr. Denis Coderre, mayor of Montreal, rang together the Peace Bell in the Japanese Pavilion at precisely 7:15 pm, corresponding to the exact moment where the bomb was dropped. A ceremony paying tribute to the memory of the victims was simultaneously held in the city of Hiroshima in the morning of August 6th, Japan time.

The Peace Bell was offered to the city of Montreal by the city of Hiroshima after their twinning in 1998, establishing thus bonds of everlasting peace and friendship.
