2016 Kumamoto Earthquake donations

We have received some inquiries on how to make contributions to the victims of the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake.
Please find below information on 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake donations.

1. Relief Donations through a Bank Account of the Consulate General of Japan in Montreal

The Consulate General of Japan in Montreal has opened an exclusive bank account in order to receive relief donations ("Gienkin"). The relief donations must be made by cash or cheque in Canadian funds. These will then be sent to the Government of Japan at a later date. (Contributions of goods cannot be accepted.) (The relief donations to the Japanese Red Cross Society is no longer accepted.)

Please note that the Consulate General of Japan is not able to issue receipts for tax credit purposes. However, if you wish, we can issue a “Donation receipt”, which indicates the date and the amount of the donation received, and states that the Consulate General of Japan in Montreal has received such amount to provide assistance to support recovery and relief efforts in the region of Kumamoto following the 2016 earthquake.

Option 1: Donations by cash or cheque brought in person to the Consulate General of Japan in Montreal

  • Cheques must be made payable to « Consulat Général du Japon »
  • Opening Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on our opening days
  • Location: the Consulate General of Japan in Montreal
    *Please fill out a donation form and submit it at the reception.

Option 2: Cheques sent by post to the Consulate General of Japan in Montreal

Please send your cheque along with a donation form (English / French) or a note indicating ① your name, ② address, ③ a description of your institution/organization: governmental organization, international organization, private sector or personal, ④ telephone number, ⑤ your choice of destination of donation (the Government of Japan or the Japanese Red Cross Society) and ⑥ if you wish to obtain a Donation receipt or not. If you wish to receive a Donation receipt, please clearly indicate so and provide your email address. You will receive it by email at a later date.

2. Direct Donations to the Japanese Red Cross Society

(No longer accepted)

(For the "Kyuenkin (Donation for JRCS activities)". If you wish to make a "Gienkin (Relief Donation)", please read (1) and (2) under the Important Notice.)

The Japanese Red Cross Society has opened the following bank account in order to receive donations from overseas. Donations will be accepted until June 15, 2016. Please read the following Important Notice before you make a donation.

※ Important Notice

(1) There are two kinds of donations to the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS). The "Gienkin (Relief Donation)" would be sent directly to the donation distribution committees at local governments of the affected area and would be provided to the affected people in cash. While the "Kyuenkin (Donation for JRCS activities)" would be used to cover JRCS’s relief activities in the area affected by this earthquake.

(2) In Principle, JRCS is accepting donation from overseas as "Kyuenkin (Donation for JRCS activities)". If you wish your donation to be used as "Gienkin (Relief Donation)", please inform JRCS via email ( donation@jrc.or.jp ) the following information after the transfer:

① Intention for your donation to be treated as “Gienkin (Relief Donation)”
② Name of the sender
③ The amount donated
④ Date of transfer
⑤ The bank to which the money was transferred to JRCS

(3) The Japanese Red Cross Society, in principle, does not issue a receipt for donations. If you wish to obtain a receipt, please inform JRCS via email ( donation@jrc.or.jp ) the following points after the transfer:

① "Request for a receipt"
② Name of the sender
③ Amount donated
④ Date of transfer
⑤ The bank to which the money was transferred to JRCS
