Scholarships

Every year, the Government of Japan (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology - MEXT) offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities:

There are three types of Government of Japan scholarships: Japanese Studies Student, Research Student and Undergraduate Student.

Important!

This website describes only the scholarships for which Canadians are eligible. Other types of scholarships are available in other countries.

Only Canadians (whether they live in Canada or abroad) can apply for a scholarship through one of the Japanese diplomatic missions in Canada.

Non-Canadians (including permanent residents and landed immigrants) must contact a Japanese diplomatic mission in their country of origin. For contact information for Japanese embassies and consulates abroad please click here.

2012 JAPANESE STUDIES STUDENT
A scholarship for undergraduate students already majoring in Japanese language and Japanese studies.

Deadline for the Submission of Applications

The required documents must be received by the Consulate General of Japan at Montreal by 5:00pm, Friday March 2, 2012.

Tenure of the Scholarship

One year or less from October 2012.

Qualifications

Interested persons must meet the following requirements:

Be a Canadian citizen;
Be born between April 2, 1982 and April 1, 1994;
Be a regular undergraduate student at a foreign (non-Japanese) university majoring in fields related to Japanese language or Japanese culture at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan (must have completed one year of studies by April 2012);
Have sufficient Japanese language ability to receive instruction at a Japanese university in Japanese.

Remarks

All candidates must take a Japanese test, which will be held at the Consulate General of Japan at Montreal. The results of this test will have a bearing on the selection.

2013 RESEARCH STUDENT

A scholarship for graduate studies in any university subject.

Deadline for the Submission of Applications

The required documents must be received by the Consulate General of Japan at Montreal by 5:00pm on Friday May 18, 2012

Tenure of the Scholarship

2 years or 1 1/2 years

Qualifications

Interested persons must meet the following requirements:

Be a Canadian citizen;
Be born on or after April 2, 1978;
Hold a bachelor's degree or the equivalent according to specified criteria outlined in the application guidelines.

Remarks

It is desirable (but not mandatory) that applicants have a basic knowledge of Japanese.
Those whose knowledge of Japanese is insufficient must take a 6-month language course at the beginning of their scholarship.
Area of study must be the same as the applicant has studied before, or a related one.

Please Note:
The Application Form (Attachment) is to be presented after successful completion of the primary screening (written application, academic examinations and interview).

2013 UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT

A scholarship for undergraduate studies in any university subject.

Fields of Study

Humanities & Social Sciences, Natural Sciences

Deadline for the Submission of Applications

The required documents must be received by the Consulate General of Japan at Montreal by 5:00pm, Friday June 1, 2012

Tenure of the Scholarship

5 years or 7 years for students in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine, pharmacy.

Qualifications

Interested persons must meet the following requirements:

Be a Canadian citizen;
Be born between April 2, 1991, and April 1, 1996;
Have completed 12 years of education or have graduated with the equivalent of Japanese Senior High School by March 2013.

Remarks

It is desirable (but not mandatory) that applicants have a basic knowledge of Japanese.
All candidates must write tests in a few academic subjects (mathematics, English, etc.). The results of these tests will have a bearing on the selection.
The first year of the scholarship is usually devoted to a preparatory course. Those students whose knowledge of Japanese is already sufficient will be exempted from the first year.
